SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utah State Board of Education named a new State Superintendent of Public Instruction Friday evening.

Larry Shumway will take over the post on July 1, when Patti Harrington retires.

Shumway is currently Deputy State Superintendent. He has also coordinated the Carson Smith Special Needs Scholarship and directed the Educator Quality and Licensing program.

Before coming to the state office, Shumway was superintendent of the Tooele School District.
