LAYTON -- Northridge High School celebrated the opening of its new on-campus Astronomical Observatory Thursday night. Administrators say it could be the first of its kind in Utah.

The centerpiece is an 800 pound, $50,000 telescope donated by Kaysville businessman David Derrick, with additional funding from the Northrop-Grumman foundation.

Northridge's astronomy teacher says the center will enhance learning. "In a hands-on, authentic basis, students will be doing exactly the same thing that astronomers do," said Wayne Sumner.

Students throughout the Davis School District will eventually have access to the observatory.
