PROVO, Utah (Nov. 20, 2006) -- For the sixth time this season, and the ninth time during his career, BYU senior quarterback John Beck has been named the Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week. Beck led No. 23 BYU to a 42-17 victory over New Mexico on Saturday to clinch the outright Mountain West Conference championship, as well as an invitation to the Cougars' second straight Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl.
Beck, who passed the 10,000-yard mark for his career, led BYU with a season-high 464 yards passing on 28-of-42 attempts. On the day, he was responsible for a total of five touchdowns, including four passing and one rushing TD. By halftime, Beck had compiled 303 yards passing and three touchdowns, including a 71-yard strike to tight end Jonny Harline in the second quarter to give BYU a 21-3 lead.
On the season Beck has thrown 26 touchdown completions, compared to just six interceptions. His +20 touchdown-to-interception margin is the highest since Brandon Doman had a margin of +25 during the 2001 season.
With his sixth player-of-the-week citation this season, and the ninth of his career, Beck ties Utah's Alex Smith for the Mountain West Conference record for most player-of-the-week honors in a single season, as well as in a career.
