This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

The construction industry has been an important part of Steve Tyner's life for a long time. Steve got his first construction job at the age of 17 — and he hasn't left the business since.

Steve worked for some of the state's major paving contractors until he realized he knew as much about the industry as his employers did. So he started his own company. In 1993, he launched Consolidated Paving and Concrete in Ogden.

The business started out doing small concrete jobs, but it has grown to become an asphalt producer, completing many large commercial projects and subdivisions. The company also services many municipalities in Utah, Idaho and Wyoming. Consolidated Paving and Concrete is one of the few Utah companies to offer the combined services of asphalt supply, paving, concrete and excavation. The company guarantees well-matched, on-grade curb and gutter and asphalt paving.

Steve says Consolidated's success wouldn't be possible without his business partner, Rick Hill, who has also been in the industry for a long time. Another of the company's best assets is its loyal and dedicated employees. The turnover rate is low because most employees are satisfied with the way they're treated and offer a high level of customer service in return.

Steve tells me that Consolidated Paving and Concrete has been working with the Army Corps of Engineers to complete a resin-modified experimental type of pavement. The asphalt is combined with a specialized cement mixture that turns the asphalt into concrete. The resulting pavement is more durable and can hold a higher weight than regular pavement. It's also less expensive to produce.

Consolidated Paving and Concrete has built a reputation and success from its dedication to customers and for offering a uniquely wide variety of products and services.

For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
