Whit Johnson reportingPeople living in the Salt Lake area are getting a break at the gas pump. That's good news for those traveling on Thanksgiving weekend.
You've surely noticed the recent drop in gas prices lately. But Utah has remained above the national average, causing some controversy.
Well now - at least in the Salt Lake area - that gap has been squeezed to one cent. Just in time for the holidays.
It's been a rough couple of years for Utah drivers.
Anna Aguirre / Driver: "I have a really big truck that I have to drive my kids to school in and I use to fill it up with 80 dollars that was like for five days."
Remember this, station after station, all playing with that dreaded number.
Adrian Zamora / Driver: "Three dollars or something like that where it just keeps going up and never comes down."
Well now things are changing. Triple A says good supply, coupled with no major storms or infrastructure problems, means gas prices are coming back down to earth.
The national average is about $2.24 for a gallon of regular. In Utah, it's about $2.33. But in the Salt Lake-Ogden area: $2.25. That is one cent away from the national average, the closest in months.
Eileen Nelson / Driver: "It's a good thing you can drive a little more and buy more food (laugh)."
Michelle Bird / Driver: "Relief... Very happy."
Adrian Zamora / Driver: "I'm just glad they're going down because, college student and all, we need gas to go everywhere."
Tonight, we even found gas stations a few cents bellow the national average, in the low two 20's.
Anna Aguirre / Driver: "I'm hoping they'll go down a little bit more actually... I wish."
The gas prices are down now, but AAA says early next week, holiday travel demand will send them back up a little.
