ROME, Nov 17, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- An Italian comedian is coming under criticism for parodying Pope Benedict XVI in slapstick skits on Italian television.
Maurizio Crozza portrays the pope in what is being termed an irreverent manner such as adding a German goose-step to his character and making him obsessed with fashion, The Los Angeles Times reports.
The programs have led to a running debate in the Italian media as well as criticism from the pope's personal secretary.
The official newspaper of the Italian Bishops Conference, Avvenire, has blasted Crozza's parodies as failed satire, bordering on the cowardly.
"These are vulgar television programs ... that attempt to ridicule figures dear to the Catholic world." says Avvenire.
In one of his skits, Crozza hikes up his gown and heaves his foot, clad in a black storm trooper's boot, onto a table while in another he is shown shooting pigeons over St. Peter's Square.
