Samantha Hayes reporting A man who escaped from an Arizona jail led police on a high speed chase along I-15 this afternoon.
Speeds during the chase reached 120 miles an hour, before it came to an end near Brigham City.
Before the chase, the driver of the white car was pulled over in Idaho for speeding. The officer discovered the man was wanted in Arizona for escaping jail. When he tried to arrest the man, he sped off, heading southbound into Utah.
UHP joined in the chase. They admit it was a dangerous chase, reaching speeds of 110-120 miles per hour. Ramps were closed and traffic was kept back.
An officer threw out spikes that punctured the man's tires. The treads blew off, but he kept driving for about 15 more miles on nothing but rims
During this time, troopers were talking to the man through dispatch. The man had called 9-1-1 and was patched through. He told troopers he was going to call his family to say goodbye.
Lt. Lee Perry, Utah Highway Patrol: "He was possibly having suicidal thoughts. Therefore we also had k-9 units ready to deploy if necessary."
The man and his passenger finally stopped. They put their hands up and surrendered to police at gunpoint.
The two are in the Box Elder County jail tonight. UHP is verifying information with Arizona authorities. That's why the suspect's names and pictures are not yet public.
