BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP/KSL News) -- Wal-Mart is expanding its $4 generic prescription program to 11 states, including Utah.
The retail giant also plans to add 502 stores to those offering the discounted medications. It will also add 17 prescriptions to the program, bringing the total number to 331 prescriptions now available.
The $4 price is for up to a 30-day supply of the drugs. The discounts will be available at both Sam's Club and Wal-Mart. That's roughly 40 pharmacies across the state of Utah.
Wal-Mart launched the program in September. Company officials say they began the program in what they call an effort to save working Americans money on health care. But critics claim it's just a stunt to draw in business and a grab a bigger share of the drug business.
The 11 states include: Idaho, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Utah, Washington and West Virginia.
Meantime, K-Mart is responding to the Wal-Mart announcement. K-Mart says it already has this program, which started in May. You can get a 90-day supply for 15 dollars. So it's a little bit more than Wal-Mart charges, but you don't have to go back as often.
