HIGHLAND -- Highland city is offering a $250 reward for anyone who takes photos and writes down license plate numbers of the people who plant yard signs, specifically cheap corrugated plastic ones advertising Internet dating services.

The Deseret News reports there also isn't much tolerance in Highland for lemonade stand or yard sale signs. The city actually pays a sign enforcement officer $3,400 a year to cruise a couple of hours a day and take down the signs.

The city says only a few people are ever cited each year, and they are usually the worst offenders.

Residents need a $20 temporary permit to legally place a yard sign. Real-estate signs are OK.

The Deseret News reports the planning commission has recommended a new ordinance designed to give residents more flexibility for temporary signs. The council has not taken action on that proposal.

City Councilman Larry Mendenhall told the Deseret News he thinks many yard signs end up being clutter.
