SALT LAKE CITY -- A brand new lab at the University of Utah could give hope to thousands of heart patients.

With the snip of a ribbon, doctors, patients and administrators celebrated the opening of the first electrophysiology MRI lab in North America today.

Physicians and researchers will use the technology to find more efficient ways to diagnose and treat atrial fibrillation, a heart disorder that affects more than 3.5 million Americans each year.

Dr. Nassir Marrouche, a University of Utah physician and researcher, said, "This is an imaging method that's so advanced that would allow us to target this disease not only by finding and diagnosing this disease, but also by managing and treating and curing hopefully this disease."

Researchers get to start work in the lab on Monday.
