WEST VALLEY CITY -- A short chase in West Valley City overnight ended with one man in custody and another still on the run.
A police officer saw what he thought was a car theft in progress on 3800 South near 1800 West. He saw four people jump into a car and then take off without the headlights on.
The officer followed the car. When he tried to pull it over, the driver took off.
The officer chased the car, at speeds that police say never reached more than 50 miles per hour, to a nearby apartment complex where the driver and a passenger got out and ran.
Officers caught up with the driver but not the passenger, who they believe may have outstanding warrants.
Two women who stayed inside the car were released.
Police still don't know why the driver ran. The car belongs to him, and he has no warrants for his arrest.
