SALT LAKE CITY — A jury found a Utah man guilty of murder on Monday in a 2024 shooting at the Fairbourne apartments in Murray.
Pirawn Yohan Mula, 24, was convicted of of murder and felony discharge of a firearm, first-degree felonies, along with obstruction of justice and possession of a weapon as a restricted person, second-degree felonies, following a four-day trial.
Mula drove two of his friends to the apartment complex on Nov. 21, 2024 to spend time with acquaintances who lived there. Mula and Panoum Jangjuol, 28, got into a verbal argument, which moved from the apartments to the parking lot.
Mula shot Jangjuol three times, and evidence shows the shots were fired from less than 3 feet away, according to prosecutors. He fled the scene and was arrested the next day. The gun was never recovered.
Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said he hopes Jangjuol's family feels they have received "some measure of justice."
"We believe this conviction provides the accountability for this thoughtless act of violence," he said in a statement.
Gill said the crime underscores the prevalence of guns in the community and encouraged those with weapons to "store it away."
"If you're going to engage in this kind of violence in our community, we're going to prosecute you, we're going to convict you and we're going to send you to prison," he said.
Mula will be sentenced on May 4.
Jackson Baka Issa pleaded guilty to possession of a dangerous weapon as a restricted person, reduced from a second-degree to a third-degree felony, for his involvement in the shooting and was sentenced to zero to five years in prison on Feb. 25. The sentence will run concurrent with prison sentences in other cases.
