SALT LAKE CITY -- If you see a street light out in Salt Lake City, you may have to call Kansas City about it.
To report a burned out street lamp, you have to call 1-800-814-4311. That's Custom Lighting Services the company contracted to do the work. They are based in Kansas City, so if the Salt Lake-area maintenance crew can't get to the phone, it goes to Kansas City.
Salt Lake Transportation engineer Mike Barry says Utah Power or Rocky Mountain Power used to be over Salt Lake's street lights, until April 2006, when CLS won the bid
"We got some good savings from going to this type of maintenance work," he said.
Barry says there are more than 14,000 street lights in Salt Lake. He says CLS crews find 90 percent of the outages but they do appreciate calls about burned-out bulbs.
"Usually the wooden poles you'll see a yellow tag and there's a number on it. It's the best thing to do is have the pole number. If you start saying it's the one down on the left or it's by the guy's garage, they don't know that type of thing. The number on the pole would be most helpful. A good description of the location is good too," Barry said.
He added, "We like it when people call in, and I wish more people knew about the number. People call me saying, ‘I just called the streets department or Rocky Mountain Power and they couldn't help me. They do get some runaround."
