SALT LAKE COUNTY -- A new school district is launching a new language program next fall that it says could make your child a fluent speaker.
If you had to use just the Spanish or French that you learned in high school, would you be able to understand a conversation in that language? Most likely, no. So, the Canyons School District wants to immerse elementary school kids in another language.
"There's a huge difference between these programs that we're offering and taking a few classes in high school," said Tamra Baker, student achievement director for the Canyons School District.
Baker says kids would only be taught in English for half of the day. The other half will be the other language. "The goal of this program is to have these students be able to take the AP test, for instance, in junior high," she said.
Oak Hollow offers French immersion, Draper and Lone Peak have Chinese, and Alta View offers Spanish.
