SOUTH SALT LAKE -- Fire crews have closed a portion of State Street after a South Salt Lake business caught fire Monday afternoon in the area near 3000 South.
Crews say they expect the road to be closed for some time as they work to get the fire out.
The fire started around 3:30 p.m. at a tortilla chip manufacturer, the Deep Fryer Company, on State Street. Smoke and flames could be seen shooting out of the roof.
Crews quickly evacuated nearby businesses.
"They were working inside when they started to smell the smoke. And they opened the back door, and there was a fire. They ran out," said Antonio Rojas, The Deep Fryer owner's brother.
Juana Alvarado, a worker at one of the businesses, told us, "Police came inside my building and told us, "Everybody go out! Out! Out! And we have everything on the table working, and we just left."
South Salt Lake, Salt Lake City, Midvale, Murray and Unified Fire Authority fire units worked for two hours to get the fire out.
