OGDEN, Utah (AP) -- A U.S. Census bureau report shows that when temperatures drop, Utah residents turn up the heat with natural gas more often than residents elsewhere.
Census figures ranked Ogden first in the nation for natural gas use in metropolitan areas nationwide. Almost 92 percent of Ogden-are homes rely on natural gas heat.
Provo was second in the rankings. Salt Lake City was ranked fourth and Logan eighth.
Questar Gas spokesman Darren Shepherd says usage rates are tied to Utah's proximity to oil and natural gas fields discovered in Wyoming during the early part of the 20th Century.
Questar provides heat to more than 800,000 Utah homes and is the Wasatch Front's only gas utility.
