Keith McCord ReportingTime sure flies! Today marks the fifth year anniversary of the opening of The Gateway. The mixed use center includes shopping, food and housing and has really transformed the west side of the downtown area.
There are several things going on to mark the event. The West High School Choir will perform; they were here at the Grand Opening five years ago. There's also a five layer cake and refreshments.
The Gateway has come a long way. We went back through some of our archives and got a good reminder of how much things have changed over there.
If you weren't here five years ago, you probably wouldn't believe what this section of town looked like -- railroad tracks and abandoned buildings and weeds. Then the Boyer Company went to work, and 375-million dollars, and 90 retailers later The Gateway helped downtown expand a few more blocks to the west.
In the early going, some wondered whether the Gateway would make it, but a variety of new stores and interesting building designs have continued to attract people. And it's continued to grow-- today there are more than 115 retailers and 450 condominiums and apartments.
The construction continues too with office buildings are reaching skyward.
As part of the festivities tonight, KSL radio is giving away a 500-dollar Gateway Gift Certificate; that drawing will take place at 5:55.
