SOUTH JORDAN -- South Jordan is cracking down on water loss. Almost 30 percent of the city's water was unaccounted for. After four years, the city found some improperly installed meters and other illegal hookups.

South Jordan spokesman Chip Dawson said, "In some instances, it's fairly sophisticated. There's a conscious effort to circumvent the system."

Dawson says the city aggressively mapped its water system and expects it to save a lot of money.

"By making the corrections and going after some of the illegal uses of water in South Jordan, it will save us roughly $2 million," Dawson said.

Thieves will be back-billed as far as possible, while those with improperly installed meters will be charged only as far as they've been there.
