Whit Johnson ReportingLots of kids will brave the cold for candy tonight. Here are some tips for keeping them safe and a list of Trick-or-Treating locations.

  • Turn on your porch light to let children know it's all right to visit your home.
  • Keep pets inside your home, garage or other safe place. Pets may be frightened when they see children in Halloween costumes and may not recognize children from their own home.
  • Set a specific time limit for your children to be out.
  • Children should be escorted by yourself or another trusted adult.
  • Children should walk, not run, to avoid tripping.
  • Children should stay on well-lighted streets.
  • Use non-allergenic face makeup on a child instead of having them wear a mask. If your child does wear a mask be sure it is removed before crossing a street.
  • Children should obey all traffic signs and look before crossing the street at corners only. Do not cross from between parked cars.
  • Visit only the homes of people you know in your own neighborhood.
  • Carry a flashlight when out on the sidewalks in your neighborhood.
  • Avoid hard plastic or wood props such as daggers or swords. Consider using foam rubber items instead.
  • Teach children home phone number and how to call 9-1-1 if they have an emergency or become lost. Remind them that 9-1-1 can be dialed free from any phone.
  • Wait until children are home to sort and check treats. Though tampering is rare, a responsible adult should closely inspect all treats and throw away any spoiled, unwrapped, or suspicious items.
  • Make sure items that can cause choking (such as hard candies), are given only to children of appropriate age.
