Ashley Hayes ReportingA late night traffic stop ended with a trip to the hospital for one Centerville Police Officer. That officer's arm was caught in the door of the getaway car. All of it was recorded on the officer's dash cam.
95 miles an hour,, that's how fast Sergeant John Spencer clocked the Toyota driving North on I-15. Once stopped Spencer smells marijuana. He questioned the driver about it and she said she didn't know what he was talking about.
After another officer arrived, Spencer asks the driver to get out of the car. She took off with Spencer's arm caught inside.
It's the kind of jeopardy Lieutenant Child says could have killed his sergeant.
Lt.Childs: "An arm could be trapped, they can be dragged. There's been officers killed in these types of situations. It's a very dangerous situation."
Luckily, Sergeant Spencer escaped. He chased down the driver and eventually helped arrest both her and her passenger. The driver 23-year old Miranda Seward is in the Davis County Jail, booked on a list of charges including felony evading and aggravated assault on an officer. Her 20-year old passenger, Christa Courtney, faces marijuana possession charges.
Sergeant Spencer is recovering at home. He has a broken scapula. It will be another six weeks before he's back on the job and the Centerville police department says it will be a difficult loss to absorb because they are already short staffed.
Lieutenant Child says the driver would have only been charged with a misdemeanor had she gotten out of the car. Instead she's booked on several felonies for injuring Sergeant Spencer and starting a chase.
