SALT LAKE CITY -- Federal prosecutors have filed charges stemming from a deadly van crash on I-70 in Sevier County.

Jose Gomez, 20, and Fernando Pineda, 25, are charged with transporting illegal aliens.

Prosecutors say on March 24, 2009, Gomez was driving a van carrying 10 illegal immigrants from California to Denver when he fell asleep and drifted off the road. The ensuing crash killed two people.

Investigators say the van was equipped with only six seats and six safety belts.

Gomez told police that Pineda was supposed to assist as a driver.

Both men are scheduled to appear Friday at the U.S. District Court in Salt Lake. They face up to 10 years in federal prison.
