ST. GEORGE -- Geologists near St. George hope to learn how big of threat a large earthquake is to the area.

The scientists are digging trenches into the Washington Fault, about three miles south of the Utah-Arizona border. The fault runs just to the east of St. George and through the city of Washington.

They hope to figure out how often earthquakes have happened in the past and the severity of those quakes.
