Pay now, or pay a lot more later on!
That's the essence of the decision voters in Salt Lake County are being asked to make with Proposition 1. In KSL's view, a "yes" vote on this proposition is a no-brainer.
Here's what it's all about.
Salt Lake County voters in 2004 approved reauthorization of the popular Zoo, Arts and Parks tax - the ZAP tax, as it's known. Since that vote, community leaders have identified 24 recreation related projects throughout the County to be built by ZAP tax dollars.
County leaders are asking voters to allow them to issue up to $65 million in general obligation bonds so they can proceed with the projects sooner, rather than later - to build them at today's cost of construction rather than what is virtually guaranteed to be a lot more in years to come.
No new tax increase is associated with this proposition. As we said, voters already reauthorized the ZAP tax two years ago. And that ZAP tax money will be used as the years go by to pay off the proposed bonds.
In KSL's view, this is a prudent use of taxpayer dollars - a wise approach for County leaders to take with their fiscal stewardship. So vote "yes" on Salt Lake County Proposition 1.
