Sam Penrod Reporting An Orem man is in the hospital after being shot by his own brother. Police say the shooter was really trying to protect his brother, but missed.
The shooting appears to have been an accident, as the victim and his brother were trying to kick several people out of their apartment who were doing drugs inside.
The trouble started just before 5:00 when the man who was shot came home to 156 W. 300 South and found the drug activity going on. He told everyone inside to leave, but they didn't.
A fight began, and that's when the man's brother ran to a nearby relative's house and got a 9 millimeter handgun.
He brought it back to the fight. But instead of helping out, the gun in the mix actually helped the situation go downhill in a hurry.
Lt. Doug Edwards, Orem Police Dept.: "In an effort to protect his brother, he fired at one of the suspects who was beating on his brother and hit his brother instead, shooting him in the abdomen."
The man who was shot was rushed to the hospital in serious condition.
His brother was arrested, as well as four other men, two women and a 17-year-old boy. Tonight police are questioning them about their involvement in all this.
One other man was taken to the hospital. Apparently he was injured after being hit by a claw hammer in the fight.
Police say they found several car stereos in the suspect's car, that appear to have been stolen. So investigators are looking into that as well.
The man who was shot is expected to survive.
