SANDY -- Two members of the Sandy City Council support extending city employees' health care benefits to domestic partners.

The Deseret News reports council members Scott Cowdell and Linda Martinez-Saville have asked staff and outside consultants to look into the potential costs.

They are intrigued by the potential such a move could have for families -- parents and adult children of city employees. Cowdell also acknowledges it would help gays and lesbians.

"It's an issue of watching out for people, not so much of their orientation. It's more a matter of dependency," he said.

Cowdell says contrary to earlier reports, he isn't expecting to take up the issue at Tuesday night's city council work session. The city is waiting for numbers on how much the move would cost.

Mayor Tom Dolan has not commented on the issue.

Salt Lake City approved domestic partner benefits for its employees in 2006. The Salt Lake County Council approved "adult designee" benefits in February.
