KSL Newsradio's Mary Richards reportingThe TRAX light rail system has reached a milestone: 50 million passengers since its opening in 1999.
It's hard to pin down, but Utah Transit Authority thinks the 50 millionth rider boarded the train sometime in the evening of September 25.
"That's intense, but I'm sure it wasn't me," said one rider.
"Your guess is as good as mine," responded one man.
"That's amazing! No, it wasn't me," said another man.
In 1999 many residents said light rail would never work, and it shouldn't be built. Now, people like Lauren Cook don't know what they'd do without it.
"I'm really grateful that I don't have to park," she said.
UTA says the 50 million riders that took TRAX saved 12.5 million gallons of gasoline, and have traveled nearly the distance between the earth and sun, and back.
