Sandra Yi ReportingThree suspected gang members are in custody after attacking a school resource officer. It happened yesterday, at Timpanogos High School in Orem.
The school resource officer saw a car full of suspected gang members loitering in the neighborhood and at the school. When he tried to arrest one of them, the others fought back.
Officer Greg Olney has a skinned knee and some scratches, but he's ok.
Yesterday, during the lunch hour, Olney saw the car full of teenagers, and recognized one of them as a gang member and someone who had trespassed at the school before.
Olney was about to arrest one of them when two of his friends began to attack. They yelled at Olney. One teen even took a swing at him and knocked his arm.
The school's assistant principal was nearby and helped subdue the suspects.
Officers did find a knife and a machete in the teens' car. Olney doesn't believe they were going to use those weapons in school, but he says some of the kids involved in the incident yesterday are known to have been involved in recent violent confrontations in the community.
He says gang violence has gone up in the Orem and Provo areas in the past two years.
Juan Godoy was arrested for trespassing and for having dangerous weapons. Two 17-year old boys were also taken into custody. One of them is a student at Timpanogos High School.
Olney says he wants to send a message that violence and drugs are not tolerated, especially in schools.
