Westminster on to round 2 with overtime victory

Press ReleaseKANSAS CITY, Mo. - It took an extra five minutes, but the Westminster men's basketball team advanced to the second round of the 2009 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament. Wes Anderson tied the game at 59 with a 3-pointer with nine second left in regulation. Westminster outscored Biola 9-4 in the overtime for the 68-63 win.

Westminster struggled in the first half shooting just 29.0% from the floor and trailed 25-23. They opened the second half on a 12-5 run sparked by Anderson and his 12 points in the first eight minutes. Westminster also forced Biola into 17 turnovers while committing just seven themselves. Anderson matched a season high with his 19 points.

Geoff Payne led the Griffins with 22 points and 11 rebounds, his eighth double-double of the year. Payne scored seven of the nine Westminster points during the overtime session. Jordan Jacobs added 11 points and had three makes from beyond the arc.

Rocky Hampton led Biola with 22 points and 13 rebounds. The Eagles shot 43.9% from the field and had eight makes from distance. Danny Campbell had four of those makes and finished with 12 points.

Westminster advances to the second round for only the second time in 10 trips to the national tournament. They will face 11th-seeded University of the Cumberlands on Friday, March 20 at 3:30 p.m. (MST). These two teams will meet for the first time ever on Friday.
