Gene Kennedy and Mary Richards reportingIt's been five years since Utah changed its design for a drivers license. Today, the state unveiled a new look and some new features on drivers licenses, designed to protect you.
If you have to renew your driver's license you may notice the new one looks a lot different than the one you have now. You'll notice that the color gradually changes on the driver's license from one side to the other.
Also, the background has an intricate design and images actually overlap text. These are all new security features that will make it tougher for counterfeiters to make fake ID's.
The state unveiled the new license this morning. They're already being issued, but we won't see them widespread on the streets until probably early next month.
Many states are updating driver's license design and they are following the guidelines of the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators. That agency wants IDs that can not be copied, especially when it comes to international travel.
You don't have to worry about the new license until your current one expires. Meantime, the Drivers License Division wants club and bar owners to get familiar with its new look. The state is also going to be doing some private sector training.
