TAYLORSVILLE -- A car crash tangled traffic and knocked out power in Taylorsville Wednesday morning, and police say street racing was to blame.

Officers say two drivers met at a stop light at 5400 S. 700 West and decided to race. Before the light turned green, both were squealing their tires and revving their engines, according to witnesses.

Both then took off at a high rate of speed.

"One of the vehicles lost control and hit the power pole, which dropped the lines on the ground," Sgt. Rod Lowry, with the Taylorsville Police Department, said.

Two homes lost power due to the downed pole.

Traffic was backed up on 5400 South all the way to Bangerter Highway while the mess was cleaned up.

Both drivers were cited for excessive speed, and the one that caused the accident was also cited for negligent collision.
