Gene Kennedy reporting Round after round of gunfire broke out in a Salt Lake City neighborhood last night.

Five people are now in custody, allegedly connected with a shootout that occurred near 500 West, 600 North. Police say it was a feud between rival gangs.

The suspects pulled up to a home and unloaded dozens of rounds. It was a terrifying experience for neighbors who were just relaxing at home.

Barbara Nelson, Neighbor: "This was boom, boom, in a pattern."

One home was the target. Police say a man and his girlfriend pulled up to the home and started shooting at it. The resident inside came out and started shooting back. Dozens of rounds were exchanged.

Lt. Gary Layton, Salt Lake City Police Dept.: "A witness indicated that they saw a large sedan drive down the street, shoot at the house, then someone came out of the house and started shooting at the car."

Twenty to 30 rounds were exchanged, with bullets hitting walls and windows. The Nelsons heard it from across the street.

Barbara Nelson, Neighbor: "I yelled at the kids, 'get out of the window, turn off the lights, get down.'"

Dale Nelson, Neighbor: "I heard all this gunfire. My daughter handed me the phone and I called 9-1-1."

When police arrived, they couldn't find the owner of the targeted home. Police think he took off on foot. They did managed to track down the car that pulled up to the home. Five people arrested, three adults, two juveniles.

Officers say this was gang-on-gang violence, with neighbors caught in the middle.

Neighbors were terrified as bullets flew into peoples' homes. One woman took her kids into a bathroom so they would be safe. Luckily, the bullets did not hit anyone.

Last night, police tried to find the weapons used in the shootout, but couldn't until early this morning. A police dog made all the difference. The dog tracked the scent from bullet holes in the homes to a nearby manhole. In the manhole, police found a plastic bag with guns inside.

Police arrested Emilio Duran, Pejay Fernandez and Anthony Baca. Investigators think this group was involved in a shooting in this neighborhood Saturday night.
