If you spend any time near downtown Salt Lake, you certainly can't miss the construction. The huge City Creek project is just about to the halfway mark now, and things are taking shape every day.

During the early part of construction, much of the work was below ground. But one sure sign that things are starting to move upward is the staging area is now filling up with huge steel beams and other items.

The $1 billion City Creek Center will be completed in 2012. According to Dale Bills, spokesman for the center on behalf of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the project is on schedule and several components will come on line early.

For example, the two 10-story condominium towers, known as Richards Court, are slated to be ready for occupancy roughly a year from now. The finished towers will be directly across the street from Temple Square.

"We're very fortunate to have a project going on like this to help keep people employed and keep people moving forward," said Jason Mathis, executive director of the Downtown Alliance.

Mathis says this construction boom is pumping more than $1 million into our economy every day, which is a good position to be in, especially during this difficult recession. Other cities wish they could say the same.

"If you go around the country, most construction zones and construction projects are surrounded by chain link fences with locks on the gates. Here? We're moving forward and moving forward aggressively," Mathis said.

The project's Web site says City Creek will be a place where "living, working and playing come together."
