(KSL News) -- Digging in the dirt was the main order of business for hundreds of students participating in Earth Science Week.
Kids from schools all over the Wasatch Front came to the Utah Core Research Center to pan for gold, study erosion and examine a wide range of rocks found in the state.
Michael Laine, Utah Geological Service: "Utah is very unique, and it's good for the local kids to know how unique Utah is and appreciate where they live."
Earth Science Week is sponsored by the Utah Department of Natural Resources to get kids interested in geology and other other careers in the field.
