(KSL News) A faulty ballast in a hallway light fixture is being blamed for the fire that destroyed an Orem home.
Irene Billings, 79, was home alone yesterday afternoon when she saw the flames and tried to put them out by stomping on them.
When that didn't work, she actually tried to put the fire out with snow, but a contractor working nearby who saw the smoke, stopped her and got her safely away from the fire. She was in good condition, but some of her hair was singed because she got too close.
Firefighters were called to the home near 400 North and 1000 West around 4:30 p.m. It took about 45 minutes to get the fire under control.
The fire marshal says the home is considered a total loss.
