TOKYO, Oct 2, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Women's tennis play in the Japanese Open began Monday with upsets as third-seeded Maria Kirilenko and fifth-seeded Sofia Arvidsson were knocked out.
Akiko Morigami, a crowd darling in Tokyo, defeated the Russian Kirilenko 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) at Ariaqke Colosseum. Marta Domachowska of Poland beat the Swedish Arvidsson 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-1).
The top seeds in the Open are Marion Bartoli of France and Ai Sugiyama of Japan, who was runner-up in the Korean Open in Seoul.
