A former police officer with Murray City is on the other side of the law. Prosecutors filed charges against Michael Spilman this afternoon.

Spilman was a police officer in Murray for about 10 years. Murray police officials will not comment on the arrest, but they say Spilman resigned yesterday.

Police in West Valley arrested Spilman on Friday on several sex-related offenses.

This afternoon, prosecutors in Salt Lake County filed formal charges against him. They are: aggravated sexual abuse of a child, forcible sexual abuse and sexual battery.

Prosecutors say the aggravated charge stems from the fact that Spilman was in a position of trust.

Charging documents allege Spilman molested a girl, who is now 17 years old, over a course of nearly five years.

Salt Lake County Deputy District Attorney Alicia Cook said, "It's something that started a while ago, but we do have a recent date of incident. There is a report that one of these incidents actually happened in January of this year."

Spilman was booked into the Davis County Jail. It's protocol for officers in Salt Lake County to be booked there for their own safety.

If convicted of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, Spilman faces a mandatory sentence of 5 years to life in prison.

The forcible sexual abuse charge carries a penalty of one to 15 years.

Spilman is being held on $150,000 bail. His first court appearance has not yet been set.
