Alex Cabrero reportingFirefighters are still doing their best to protect some vacation cabins in Sanpete County.
Two fires are burning just outside of Fountain Green tonight. The larger of the two is getting very close to several vacation homes.
One of the biggest challenges is just getting to the fire. It's up a rough, dirt road where a grader-plow was needed so crews could get their equipment in to fight it. Investigators believe these fires were started by people; either by accident or on purpose.
Greg Larsen, Tooele Resident: "This is hitting way too close to home."
Greg Larsen has a cabin in the area, and is worried everything he put into it could be gone.
Greg Larsen, Tooele Resident: "It's just been a lot of good memories up there, and it's just really frightening to see all the smoke so close, and you can see the flames."
It's Fred Johnson's job to get the flames out.
Fred Johnson, Fire Incident Commander: "The cabins are our primary concern at this point. We are basically deploying 90-percent of our resources right now to protect these cabins."
Another concern with this fire is manpower. Even though it is still wildfire season, a lot of the federal firefighters are no longer on the job, so getting crews to this one has been tricky."
Fred Johnson, Fire Incident Commander: "This late in the season, we typically experience a real shortage of manpower."
Volunteer fire departments helped keep the flames down until more crews could arrive.
So far, more than a thousand acres have burned.
Howard Lathrop, Salt Lake City Resident: "Pretty tough situation."
Howard Lathrop just hopes the flames go down, before his cabin does.
Howard Lathrop, Salt Lake City Resident: "We're gonna turn on our sprinklers, run our well, and get everything wet around there as much as we can."
But when your cabin is so close to an approaching fire, it's going to take a lot more than sprinklers.
Greg Larsen, Tooele Resident: "Anything that sounds like they're gonna put it out makes me feel better."
The exact cause of the fire is still being looked into. Investigators are asking anyone who was in the area to give fire crews a call if they remember anything that looked suspicious.
