Gene Kennedy ReportingAn argument at a gas station leads to a carjacking. The suspect may have tried to run over the victim.
We don't know what the argument was about. Police say out of nowhere the suspect jumped into the victim's car-- a gray Cadillac-- and took off. Some say he tried to hit the victim with the car.
Lt. Fred Lewis / Salt Lake City Police: "That's still under investigation, but there is some information that the driver swerved in the parking lot, and came close to hitting the victim. It may have been accidental or intentional. We're not clear on that part yet."
The victim threw rocks at his own car, trying to get the thief to stop. Meantime, the clerk inside the Tesoro at 1280 E. Park Way is watching all of this. It was her first day on the job.
Friends of the victim followed the suspect and managed to call police. Officers caught up with the suspect not far from the gas station and he did pull over, but then ran on foot.
Police say 27-year-old Christopher Williams started jumping over fences and cut his head in the process.
Police brought canines out and one officer picked up his dog and put the animal over the fence to nab Williams.
Paramedics had to bandage the man up and took him to the hospital. From there, it's off to Salt Lake County Jail.
He'll be booked on suspicion of carjacking, aggravated robbery and assault.
