Shelley Osterloh Reporting Teaching students about the environment and water conservation is the focus of a new outdoor classroom in West Valley. Today a team of volunteers are helping "build" the classroom.

The site of a retention pond is being used for this outdoor classroom, with pavillions providing shade.

Crews were there early this morning. In all, about 40 volunteers from Home Depot will be there today. It's one of many service projects Home Depot employees do each year.

West Valley City has added some funds for the project and says the community will benefit a lot.

Aaron Crim, West Valley City Spokesman: "The Meadowlands outdoor classroom is meant to teach those school children -- not only the elementary school but also Jr. high and high school and really anyone who wants to come out -- to teach them the importance of storm water protection and the process of treating that storm water. And that's really what the outdoor classroom is about."

Derek Parra was among those volunteers building the site.

Derek Parra: "We have two outdoor pavillions here that are gonna have some information plaques to kind of tell children what's out there, what kinds of plants are out there. We're gonna monitor them, how they grow, what they do for storm water and drainage."

The outdoor classroom is located at 5990 West 2950 South.
