ELKO, Nevada — Police are investigating a shooting at the Elko Regional Airport that has left a child with unknown injuries and the suspected gunman dead of what authorities say appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Someone called about an active shooter at the airport about 12:30 p.m., Elko Police Lt. Shane Daz said. Initially, police said two people were found shot and killed but later confirmed just one person — the alleged male shooter — was dead.
"The shooting was near the check-in area," Daz said.
One person was transported to the hospital with gunshot wounds "in an unknown condition," Daz said.
The injured person is a juvenile, according to police, but police did not provide additional details about the child.
As of Monday afternoon, Daz said there is no threat to the community. The shooting remains under investigation.
He said the airport was closed Monday afternoon, delaying inbound flights. Police are hoping to open the facility sometime Monday night.
A flight initially scheduled to depart from the Salt Lake City International Airport to Elko Monday night was rescheduled for Tuesday morning.
