SALT LAKE CITY — A day after former head coach Kyle Whittingham stepped down following a 21-year tenure with Utah, newly-named head coach Morgan Scalley signed a five-year contract worth $27 million (up to $36 million with incentives), according to his contract that was obtained by KSL.

Scalley signed his first head coaching contract on Dec. 13, a day after being named coach ahead of the Las Vegas Bowl and about two weeks before Whittingham accepted the head coaching job at Michigan.

The details of his contract were obtained by KSL through the state's records laws.

In Scalley's first season as head coach, his base salary will be $3.6 million, with an increase of $150,000 each year over the five-year term. In addition, he will earn $1 million in multi-media rights payments for "promotional opportunities" as part of a personal sponsorship with the university's MMR partner, and an additional $500,000 from Under Armour each season.

Scalley also has the potential to make up to $1.5 million each season in "incentive based compensation," which includes bonuses for conference championship game appearances and wins, bowl game appearances, top-25 status as a team, coach of the year awards, as well as academic achievement for his roster.

A full breakdown of his incentives can be found in the attached contract below. If you can't see the contract, click here.

Scalley also receives the standard benefits the university provides to its head football coach, including a vehicle, a smartphone, a country club membership to the Salt Lake Country Club, 10 season tickets to football games in a private stadium box, and up to 10 men's basketball tickets, and the ability to conduct summer football camps

Should Scalley voluntarily end his contract — such as being hired on as a coach elsewhere — he'd owe the university 75% of his base salary, outfitter payments and MMR payments over the remainder of his contract.

On March 12, Utah announced that Morgan Scalley and his wife, Liz, were gifting $2 million to the football program.

"The University of Utah and particularly Utah athletics have been an extremely important and influential part of my life for as long as I can remember," Scalley said in a statement. "My love for this place includes a vision of where we can go and what we can achieve, and it will require an increased effort from everyone who shares in that vision.

"Liz and I simply wanted to do something for this amazing place that shows our faith in and commitment to the future of this incredible university, and how excited we are for what's to come."
