SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake man has been arrested after police say he shot and killed a man in the back just as he was riding away on the gunman's bicycle.

Shane Hagaman, 23, was booked into Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of murder. Police say Tyson Scott Babb, 42, was stealing a bike when Hagaman fatally shot him.

The incident happened just before 5 a.m. Tuesday near 750 South and 1300 East. Hagaman called 911 and reported, "A man just tried to steal my bike. I shot him. He escaped in a white Toyota Tacoma," according to a police booking affidavit. "(Hagaman) said that the suspect who stole his bike was riding away, and he shot him. (He) said there was blood on the ground, and the male got into the passenger side of a white Toyota Tacoma."

Officers arriving on scene found a broken lock that was used for the bike partially attached to a handrail, the affidavit states.

"The handrail where the broken bike lock was located was outside and in front of the residence door of the arrested person," the affidavit states. "Multiple shell casings were located on the driveway of the residence."

Just after 5 a.m., a local hospital contacted police to say that a man with a gunshot wound, later determined to be Babb, had been dropped off.

"The male dropped off at the hospital was declared deceased. The deceased male appeared to have a gunshot wound to his upper back. The deceased male is the registered owner of the Toyota involved in this case," according to the affidavit.

Police said that although Babb was stealing Hagaman's bicycle, Hagaman "engaged in conduct that created a grave risk of death by shooting at the male riding away on the bike and hitting him in the back."

As for the driver who dropped Babb off at the hospital, Salt Lake police said Tuesday that they know the identity of the person and are trying to find the individual, but that person is not facing any charges.
