SALT LAKE CITY — A man sentenced to the Utah State Prison a year ago for his role in the murder of a 15-year-old boy is now facing new charges.

Xavior Lunt, 19, was charged Friday in 3rd District Court with aggravated assault by a prisoner and possession of a weapon, second-degree felonies.

Manuel de Jesus Cabrera, 32, is listed as a co-defendant and is charged with the same crimes.

On Sept. 26, Department of Corrections officers responded to a fight in one of the cells at the Utah State Prison. They found an inmate "covered in blood and was bleeding from multiple areas of his body, including his head and face," according to charging documents.

The inmate allegedly told investigators that Lunt and Cabrera, whom he called gang members, had entered his cell and began to "cut and stab him" and then took some of his belongings, the charges state. A homemade weapon was found on the cell floor, "consisting of a toothbrush with two razor blades attached to the handle."

Lunt was convicted of murder for the ambush shooting death of 15-year-old Francisco Jesus Cuena in West Valley in 2023. He was sentenced to a minimum of 15 years and up to life in the Utah State Prison. Lunt was sent to prison just a couple of months shy of his 18th birthday.
