PROVO — A Lehi man died after the motorcycle he was riding was struck by a van in Provo Monday evening.

Provo police responded to a report of a crash at the intersection of University Avenue and 1200 South shortly after 6:30 p.m. Officers said a van was traveling north on University Avenue and made a left turn onto 1200 South when it collided with a motorcycle that was traveling south on University Avenue.

The motorcyclist — Markus David Ewart, 20 — was transported to the hospital, where he later died, police said. The crash marks the latest motorcycle death in what has now become the deadliest year for motorcycles in at least a decade. Fifty-four motorcycle deaths have been reported in Utah so far this year, according to the Utah Department of Public Safety.

At the same time, Provo police also responded to an alleged DUI crash near 300 S. University Ave. In that crash, a vehicle hit the center island of the roadway, causing "traffic lane obstructions," police said. The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, and the crash is being investigated.
