SALT LAKE CITY — An American Fork man who was arrested in Missouri after kidnapping, sexually assaulting and bringing a 16-year-old there from Utah has been sentenced to prison.
Douglas Jonathan Logan, 21, was sentenced Aug. 19 to four terms of one to 15 years in prison for kidnapping, two counts of forcible sexual abuse and one count of sexual exploitation of a minor, all second-degree felonies. The prison terms were ordered to be served at the same time, although they spanned two different cases.
Third District Judge Chelsea Koch said she issued a more serious sentence than suggested by Adult Probation and Parole because she found that Logan posed a "significant safety risk to the victim and the community."
The judge said he admitted to having sex with the 16-year-old each time they met, and to physical violence — including dragging her into the forest and threatening to kill her. Koch said Logan previously had a mentor and patient relationship with her while she was in a home for troubled teens. Charging documents also say he was her supervisor at a retail store.
"(Logan) knew the victim was underage; he minimized his conduct by stating that the victim never said she did not want to be bitten or clawed. ... He removed the victim from the state without permission of her parents," the judge said in the sentencing document.
The victim described being knocked unconscious and having her back clawed to the point that it left scars.
Logan pleaded guilty on June 11 under a plea deal that dismissed charges for rape and object rape, first-degree felonies; kidnapping and three counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, second-degree felonies; endangerment of a child, a third-degree felony; and lewdness, a class B misdemeanor.
He admitted in the plea statement to abusing the 16-year-old in 2024, until taking her out of the state against her will on July 9, 2024. Both of them resigned from their jobs that day and left their cellphones with Logan's family, the charges state.
Sheriff's deputies in Callaway County, Missouri, were contacted after Utah officials learned they planned to head to that state. They found the two and arrested Logan.
