WEST JORDAN — A man was arrested Wednesday and accused of torturing a dog.

William Griffin Broadbent, 24, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of torture of a companion animal and three counts of aggravated cruelty to an animal.

Over the course of a week, Broadbent was recorded on a neighbor's surveillance camera "kicking his roommate's dog, punching the dog, throwing household items at the dog, and hog-tying the dog's legs together upside-down, then tying the dog to the fence," according to a police booking affidavit.

When questioned, Broadbent — who claimed to have a mental illness — said he "is ordered by his friend who owns the dog to discipline the dog in this manner for him to have a place to live," the affidavit alleges.

Police noted that animal control officers were in the process of taking possession of the dog. No other information about the dog was immediately available.
