SALT LAKE CITY — A semitruck transporting beer crashed on I-80 at the mouth of Parleys Canyon, closing the freeway westbound during rush hour on Thursday.

All lanes of I-80 had reopened by 7:30 p.m., but the Utah Department of Transportation warned of backups along westbound I-80 between Parleys Summit and Salt Lake City.

The crash happened when a semitruck going west was approaching the I-215 turnoff, and the truck lost its brakes and couldn't stop, Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Cameron Roden said. The driver took the ramp but went back to the left and down the embankment, clipping a Ford heavy-duty truck with a gooseneck utility trailer. The semi then hit the concrete barrier that divides westbound I-80 from the I-215 ramp, Roden said.

The driver of the semitruck was transported to a hospital with minor injuries.

The crash spread beer and debris across all lanes of traffic westbound, and it took some time for crews to clean the area.
