SALT LAKE CITY — An argument between acquaintances who were traveling together in a truck resulted in one man shooting the driver and then stealing the driver's truck, police say.

The incident happened at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, near 1000 W. California Avenue. Three men were traveling together in a truck. How the men knew each other was still being investigated.

At least two of the men got into an argument, said Salt Lake police detective Michael Ruff, and the truck pulled over and the men got out. It was not immediately known what the men were arguing about.

"As the occupants exited the truck, one of the passengers shot the driver and took the truck," Ruff said.

The victim was taken to a local hospital in what police described as critical condition, but said his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. The stolen truck was found abandoned a short time later on a freeway.

The search for the gunman continued Tuesday. Anyone with information is asked to call the police at 801-799-3000.
