THE INSECT WORLD — The Butterfly Biosphere at Thanksgiving Point is one of my kids' favorite places to visit. The opportunity to interact so closely with hundreds of colorful butterflies from around the world truly is special.
I have a friend who applies special lotion before visiting the biosphere because she says the fruity scent attracts more butterflies to her. I didn't believe her at first, but then I saw photos on her Facebook page that showed how many butterflies came to roost on her.
So, there appears to be some merit to the fruity-lotion theory. This video suggests bald men have a similar advantage when it comes to attracting butterflies.
I've occasionally had butterflies land on my head or shoulder. But it always seems precarious, as if I make one false move, they'll immediately flutter away.
But there's something about this man's bald head that seems to make the insects become almost territorial. What could it be? Does his scalp resemble a smooth river stone? Are bald heads fruitier-smelling than other heads?
We may never know all the answers. But my guess is that if you shave your hair and douse your head in fruity soap, you'll probably attract enough butterflies to literally have them pick you up and fly away with you.
