SOUTH SALT LAKE — An argument between two men resulted in one man being shot in the leg.

Michael Ray Ellis, 44, was charged Tuesday in 3rd District Court with aggravated assault resulting in serious injury and being a restricted person in possession of a gun, second-degree felonies, and two counts of illegal shooting of a gun, a third-degree felony.

On June 18, near 2200 South and 400 East, another 44-year-old man approached Ellis and asked "if he had any 'blues,'" according to charging documents. This made Ellis upset and an argument ensued. During the argument, the victim called Ellis a derogatory name.

"Ellis then began shooting" at the man, the charges allege. Two shell casings were found at the scene and police had to apply "a tourniquet to (the man's) leg. (He) had just been shot in the lower portion of his right leg."

Prosecutors say Ellis' lengthy criminal history includes prior convictions for robbery, burglary and assault.
